Getaway 2010
We hope you are having a great summer! Ours has been flying by. It’s hard to believe that it is almost July. Earlier this month we traveled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Myrtle Beach Getaway Conference.
As you know, Justin is going to be a freshman in high school this fall. So, for the first time, he was not hanging with mom and dad at the conference, but was a full participant. He roomed with three other students from Orlando who didn’t know one another before the conference began. It was a little rocky at first, but by the end of the week, the boys were enjoying each other’s company. Justin enjoyed the worship, speakers and workshops, but probably his highlight was participating in “The Battle” (pictured in the red swimsuit) on the Day of Outreach.
There were approximately 600 students from across the eastern half of the United States in attendance. They loved their times of worship with Tenth Avenue North and were challenged to take the next step in their relationships with the Lord through our speakers, Greg Speck and James White. They were trained and equipped in their faith through a variety of morning seminars.
While the vast majority of students who attended the conference were believers before they arrived, several students trusted Christ during the conference, including a couple of 8th grade girls from a church youth group. There was also a young man who placed his faith in Jesus during the seminar time when he was learning how to share the gospel with others.
In the afternoon, students fanned out across the beach to reach out to those on vacation. They played dodgeball, held tug-of-war competitions, distributed free bottles of water, and participated in The Battle (a scripted battle of good vs. evil that is designed to draw a crowd). Each of these activities was designed to give students the opportunity to engage in spiritual conversations and share the gospel. A number of people who heard the gospel throughout the week placed their trust in Christ!
Our three younger kids had a great time with the other “staff kids” during childcare. They also loved watching The Battle and worshipping with Tenth Avenue North.
Thanks so much for allowing us to serve students at this conference! We appreciate you!
